Scare tactics about the economy

The advisor at Goldco sent me a packet of materials warning about an imminent economic crash. It included charts, articles, and a DVD about the collapse of the dollar. Every piece of content was designed to make me afraid of keeping money in stocks or bonds. After weeks of follow-up calls, I moved $65,000 into a gold IRA. They recommended "premium select" coins that they said would outperform standard bullion in a crisis. The markup was about 110% over melt value. When I eventually had the coins appraised, the appraiser told me he sees this exact scenario multiple times a month - seniors being sold overpriced coins after being frightened by doom-and-gloom marketing. The coins themselves are fine, he said, but paying double what they are worth means you start underwater from day one.
